The Self-Medication Manufacturers Association of South Africa (SMASA) is the main driver of International Self-care Day, which takes place on the 24th July in South Africa. Formed in mid-1999, SMASA represents and supports companies involved in the manufacture and distribution of healthcare products, including over-the-counter medicines that enable consumers to better manage their health and well-being.

SMASA is therefore committed to promoting International Self-Care Day to all South Africans - it’s a day that aims to create awareness about the importance of self-care and to encourage the general public to make smarter choices when it comes to their overall health. It’s also a date that is ideally suited to the campaign’s core message – that self-care should be experienced 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or 24/7.

With non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, high blood cholesterol and diabetes now accounting for some 35 percent of annual deaths in South Africa, and consuming substantial proportions of healthcare resources, it is important that all South Africans equip themselves with the right knowledge to practice self-care and responsible self-medication. With over 100 000 non-prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and self-care knowledge readily available, the general public is well equipped to take control of their own health and wellbeing, and save money.

By browsing through the SMASA self-care247 website, you will discover new and exciting ways to take control of your overall health without spending money. The self-care247 website will keep you up-to-date with latest self-care news and provide you with tips on how to take charge of your health, responsibly and cost effectively.
